Radio is Real – Feat. Leo Luna

Radio is Real - Leo Luna

How important was music when you were growing up?

“Music has always been part of my life, since I was born on Mexican Independence Day. Growing up, I listened to all genres of music. I was surrounded by cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmas and grandpas who all shared their individual tastes.

I must’ve been just two or three years old when I first became curious on how the music was transmitted from the speakers of a portable radio.

Before finding myself in the radio world, I studied Marketing and Graphic design in Vancouver, BC. Now, as a programmer at CJSF 90.1 FM, I promote new music to my listeners and help artists reach out to a wider audience.”

What is a typical day for you as a Music Programmer?

“First things first: coffee. Then, I review the program and follow up with guests on the schedule. Once the music program is ready to go, I make my way to the booth. I always make sure to check for any new last minute releases to play on the show. Finally, we’re on the air and the magic of radio begins.

There are rules and regulations that have to be met before selecting the program. With those parameters in mind, I choose music that adds to the narrative of the show.”

How do you bring your community into your programming?

“I like going to album release parties of bands that are brought to my attention. I usually keep my ears open to what surrounds me on the streets. You never know what you might come across on a day-to-day basis!

Radio is important because it has norms and regulations that are there for a purpose, and that helps us reach a younger audience.”

What would you tell an artist curious about sending their music to radio for the first time?

“I always ask artists who are interested in radio if they’re set up to receive royalties. Music royalties are extremely important, and ensure you get paid when your music is used.

We are always evolving and I am living the transition of radio through the digital era, where everyone and everything is melting together…”
