An Interview with Jokia

Jokia

Team Play MPE

August 5, 2021

Team Play MPE is pleased to present an interview with Gospel music phenom Jokia, in conversation with our own David Gurtina.

Jokia’s single “Yahweh” recently hit #1 on the Billboard Gospel charts, an impressive feat for any musician, let alone a DIY artist!

Many artists of this era who take the independent path – whether by choice or by necessity – find themselves navigating the choppy waters of the music industry without a rudder. Jokia can relate. Several years back she ‘missed the boat’ (as it were) in signing a record deal, and was thrust into the navigator role as an independent artist, eventually starting and running her own label. In this interview Jokia talks about coming to terms with industry ‘rejection’, the value of mentors, and how she learned to not only survive but thrive as an indie, by utilizing resources and tools like Play MPE: ‘As an independent artist, and as an independent label…we have access. That is massive! Essentially you’re helping artists’ dreams come true. You don’t need to have a big machine engine behind you to have your music exposed.’

Take a video trip with David and Jokia from those early years of trying to be discovered, through the process of starting her own business in a constantly shifting industry, building her team, hitting #1, and most recently performing and presenting at the Stellar Awards this past Sunday August 1st, 2021.

Jokia’s story is sure to inspire!
